Ann L. Carter is an artist and writer who has lived and worked in and around Manhattan, Kansas, for over 34 years. She adopted two daughters from China and Vietnam and wrote about this experience in a recently published book, Spiders from Heaven. Her art work has been in many local and regional shows. While her earlier pieces were figurative silkscreens, she is now working with encaustic and mixed media triptychs. Her subject is often birds, small magical creatures that have brought beauty and grace into her life.
Encaustic is an ancient art medium that has recently regained popularity. It is the use of colored hot beeswax to create images, often rich in texture and depth. At first I wasn’t sure what the excitement was about, but as the four day workshop continued, I began to see all the many possibilities for me in my art.
