| Stan Harder is a Nebraska artist, he has been doing fine woodworking for over 15 years. Stan sees wood as having a grain and figure pattern that is a three dimensional 'fingerprint of God'. The woodworker's challenge is to create a surface to work with classic shapes. Sometimes he will add a surprise, in the form of carving, that will make the piece seem to transform from the expected classic turned shape into an illusion of an organic specimen. Bark inclusions, voids and even the bark from the edge of the tree itself is incorporated into his work. The most beautiful parts of a tree are the parts that many people would call defects. Stan takes pride in taking the most damaged, deformed or distressed part of a log and exposing the beauty within it. |
